| | Winifred Ayo-Vaughan studied nursing, midwifery and public health in Birmingham and London, and eventually received a nursing education diploma from the University of Edinburgh in 1958. She initially aspired to be a doctor, but she decided to pursue nursing because she wanted to spend more time with her patients.
