'WE ARE OUR OWN LIBERATORS'

THE BLACK LIBERATION FRONT

1971–1993

DOCUMENTARY

This documentary explores the history of the Black Liberation Front (BLF). Featuring the interviews of nine former members of the BLF and the Fasimbas, this film is intended to be an introduction to the history of 20th century Black activism in Britain. It is suitable as an educational tool for people of all ages. It was researched, filmed, edited, and produced by members of the Young Historians Project from 2015 to 2017. We aim to highlight the major achievements and contributions of the BLF to the Black community in Britain and internationally – including the BLF's influential Grassroots newspaper, their support for African liberation movements, the founding of independent Black bookshops, the Ujiima housing association, supplementary schools, and more. Our interviewees also reflect on the main challenges faced by BLF members; such as attacks from the state, and unequal gender dynamics within the group. The film ends with their sage advice for the youth of today. Please watch and share widely, we hope you enjoy!
